CHAPTER TEN

Over the next few days, we settled into a blissful routine. I stayed in Joe's house every night, making myself at home. Calling into my own house on a daily basis, so convenient its being across the street. We ate takeaways and ready meals and watched films. So much kissing I feared for the good health of my tender lips and surrounding skin. I resorted to excessive use of moisturizer to preserve my good looks, applying it very discreetly when the opportunity arose at the day job.

I told my parents that it was Joe Blackwell who I was seeing. He lived across the street—there was no hiding the fact I was there. It was no big deal, after the initial surprise they handled the whole gay thing really well. It was a non-issue, as it should be. Mum just insisted I invite him to dinner some day soon.

Midweek football practice immediately after work on Wednesday night was an interruption to the routine, when it finished at 8 pm I was in a big a hurry to get away and back to Joe.

Joe does voluntary work with an LGBT youth group on Thursday nights. Over the weeks, we've been seeing each other, that had become the night I hung out with my older brother, Sean. He'd recently split up with his long-term girlfriend, Jessie. I looked forward to seeing Sean. Apart from being my brother he was the only friend who knew I was gay. Okay, I was starting to count Joe's friends as my own, I had Reza's and Rob's numbers on my phone, but they were still new acquaintances and primarily Joe's friends.

This Thursday though, Sean was otherwise engaged and I was at a loose end for a few hours. I took myself for a drive in my battered old van. It was so ancient that even I could afford it but I rarely drove to avoid putting additional miles on the clock. And I wasn't sure how much life was left in it. I'm a plumber, not a mechanic.

My subconscious may have guided me there; I was on the street where Dean lived. He also still lived with his parents but was in a long-term relationship with the love of his life. I liked Dean but when I'd been single it was hard to relate to him. Suddenly we had more in common.

Without thinking it through I sent Dean a text:"Are you home, can you talk?"

He must have been holding his phone as the reply was instantaneous:"yes yes"

Followed by:"call me"

I typed:"In person? I'm outside your house"

"Come in"

I didn't know who'd be there or what I'd be walking into, or even what I was going to say, but I just knew I'd be happier in my territory, which is in my van.

"Do you want to come out? We could go for a drink?"

About a minute later Dean appeared, opened the passenger door and slipped inside.

"What's up?" he asked.

"Why does anything need to be up?"

"How often have you turned up at my house, like this without prior warning?"

"Never.
